Gamewells were very common in many police departments including mine (LAPD) and were produced originally by the Gamewell Co. out of New York and later out of Newton, Mass. They were originally produced in the late 1800’s out of pig iron and contained telegraph later updated with rotary dial phones. There are still a few in operation in the country but most departments retired them when cell phones became popular. The mold in which yours was made is an original Gamewell mold and was used to produce many of the boxes used by the LAPD. The number plate is a replica in the same style used in the early 1900’s. The number plate was indexed to identify the location of the Gamewell box, much the same system as used in fire alarm boxes. ENJOY.
